Babington House

When I began my career in England, before I developed my brand Ronny Colbie, I had the great privilege to work for Soho house & Co as Head of Internal Flowers. For those that are unfamiliar with the private members club, the company manages over 23 “houses” and estates around the world. Amongst the list of houses is Soho Farmhouse in Oxfordshire where I was based and worked alongside a long list of wonderful coworkers, including the gorgeous Bride in this feature Helen. During my time at Soho House & Co, I formed a great love and appreciation for Babington House in Somerset and its surrounding estate. So when the bride and groom, Helen and Chris, came to me to create their dream wedding at this very special and familiar place, I was simply elated.

The current house, built in 1705, boasts the classic Georgian and regal aesthetic that comes to mind when we think of a traditional English manor. The opulent light fixtures, original staircases, grandiose fireplaces, combined with the thoughtful furnishings, makes for a wedding venue of dreams. Needless to say, it was very exciting to revisit this dreamlike manor and play a big part in the creation of such a momentous day with my old coworker and friend.

The wonderful wedding day took place in October, a beautiful time in Somerset, but not without its challenges. Although the bride wanted a fresh and somewhat traditional summer look, I knew it was important to work within the theme of autumn and all the beautiful tones the season provides in our surroundings. Working with this, I created many different floral features to be scattered about the venue.

A mantelpiece bursting with deep greens of Eucalyptus and Beech branches, served as the base to clean white Hydrangeas, Caramel Antique Roses and pops of light blue Oxypetalum. A circular arch for the gorgeous pair to stand under, hosted a similar grandeur with Keira David Austin Roses, Earl Grey Roses and even some fresh Snowberries. The Bride’s bouquet was simply elegant with bunches of Peony Roses in an assortment of pale pinks and whites. And last but not least a candle lit meadow trailing up the grand staircase created a very ethereal feeling of opulence and abundance.

Working with Helen and Chris was simply a delight, as they allotted me much creative freedom at Babington House. Helen had worked as head of marketing for Cowshed, a spa and retreat on the estate offering a full range of pampering treatments and a fantastic line of products. Working in this line of business, Helen understands the importance of the first impression, and when we designed the look for the wedding’s reception room, we wanted it to be understated and yet very elegant. Purposeful, nodding towards the traditional, with hints of lavishness and magic.

With the combined efforts of the bride and groom, my team at Ronny Colbie, and the helpful brilliance of Babington’s event planner Becky, each of our dreams were brought to light. A huge thank you to everyone involved, including David Watts the extraordinary photographer who captured this stunning couple on their very special day amongst Babington House’s famed mystique and charm. Cheers again to you both Helen and Chris, a huge thank you for bringing me back of this very special place in my heart.
